Chris Forsberg Takes 3rd Place at Formula Drift!

Chris Forsberg’s incredible 3rd placing at Formula Drift the weekend of October 7th and 8th did not come easily. The weekend started off with rain and some major technical problems, but Forsberg’s quick and intelligent team got the Z ready to run for qualifying. Since there was a belt and oil pressure issue, Forsberg had to run the car very carefully so as not to blow the engine and end the entire weekend right then and there; however he placed a miraculous 16th place overall for qualifying!

On Saturday, Forsberg raced valiantly against Matt Field in the top 32, Samuel Hubinette in the top 16 (with whom Forsberg has probably had more run-ins than any other Formula Drifter!), and the top 8 against Robbie Nishida. In the semifinals, Forsberg was unfortunately defeated by Rhys Millen, who advanced to the finals, but there was still one more chance at the podium …

Before the final round, Forsberg was in 4th place overall for the championship, with only Darren McNamara standing between him and the podium. During the entire event, Forsberg and his team kept a watchful eye on McNamara’s battles; if Forsberg wanted a spot at the podium, he would need more points than McNamara by the end of the day. And just who does Forsberg go against for the podium spot? None other than McNamara himself. This was not only a shot for 3rd place in the event, but also for 3rd in the championship! Forsberg and McNamara would duke it out on the track in one of Formula Drift’s more interesting battles of the season.

The fight for the podium started with Forsberg in the lead, with McNamara close on his tail. As Forsberg came off the lower bank wall, McNamara collided into the Z’s rear quarter and spun out before the inner clip. On Forsberg’s following run, he had some trouble following McNamara closely. Forsberg overrated on the throttle to catch up, and he hit the lower wall. However, McNamara also hit the lower wall and tore the back end of his car completely off! McNamara was unable to complete the course, and after reviewing the video of the first run, Forsberg was announced the winner!

Mishimoto is very proud to be keeping Forsberg’s engine running nice and cool during the Formula Drift series. Here’s to this season and many after!
