Honda’s main goal in building the Element-D was to showcase the youthful spirit of the Element through the sport of drifting. “We felt that the Elements’ unique style and versatility was a perfect match for drifting.” - James Robinson (Senior Drivability Engineer) The inspiration behind the build for the Element-D was to have a unique vehicle to showcase the ingenuity and creative spirit of the associates at Honda R&D. After the project was approved by the R&D Executives, the work was done at Honda’s research facility. The team worked after hours and on weekends, so there would be no interference with the regular development process. The front and rear subframes were modified to allow a twin turbocharged 3.2 Liter V6 from an Acura TL, and an 8.8 IRS differential. They added two Garrett GT2860RS turbos and custom stainless exhaust to maximize boost output. After about 500 hours of labor, the Element-D was complete and running 500+ HP at the rear wheels.
