Mishimoto Jeep Wrangler YJ and TJ Performance Fan Shroud Kit

Quite the project this Jeep TJ electric fan shroud kit has been! We've gone through a few design iterations and conducted some pretty cool testing to ensure that our product will adequately cool both the 2.5L and the 4.0L.

    Testing Results

The last portion of our article series showed the testing apparatus and our plans for extended idle testing with our Jeep TJ electric fan kit. We would be monitoring coolant temperatures to see the impact of an electric fan as opposed to a mechanical setup provided by the factory.

    Testing Conditions

    • Ambient temperature: 72°F
    • Testing timeframe: 1400 seconds (23.3 minutes)
    • Vehicle: Jeep Wrangler YJ 4.0L

First up, the results and plot for the stock mechanical fan.

Rubbing Elbows with the 6.0L! Mishimoto Powerstroke Intake Elbow R&D, Part 1: Factory Component Evaluation and Initial Prototyping

Interested in purchasing our 6.0L intake elbow?

If you are familiar with our brand, you know we have a vast product line of heat exchangers and associated products available for the Ford 6.0L Powerstroke. We've had great feedback from our customers about our existing products as well as the new products they would like to see come out of our garage. Now that we have our own 6.0L shop truck (shown below), we have easy access to a vehicle for product development and test fitting.

We decided to come up with our own rendition of an inexpensive, free-flowing intake elbow for the 6.0L. Yes, we realize there are ample options currently on the market. That said, we would like our design to have the following features.

    • Great value and high quality materials
    • Minimum 2 1/8" ports for sensors, nitrous, or meth injection
    • Pipe design with optimal flow and smooth internal flow
    • Includes all hardware needed for installation

After doing our research, we are quite certain that power

After running into some testing issues (transmission problems) with one of our donor trucks, we began looking for a new truck to bring into the garage for data collection. We decided to target a modified truck, assuming those interested in our Cummins intercooler kit would better relate to any benefits we would see on something pushing more power. After putting out a request for local volunteers, we finally struck gold with a well modified 24V that was relatively local, and the owner was willing to make the drive to help us out.

    The Truck!

We've had a lot of very interesting vehicles in our shop in the past - various diesel trucks, high-horsepower Evos and STIs, and even a couple of fairly strong V8-powered vehicles. This one certainly makes the top five for interesting and unique test vehicles.

The factory inlet/outlet portions of this intercooler are quite interesting. They are shaped to route around the radiator support; however, this has a significant impact on the airflow through this part of the cooler. This bottleneck cannot be eliminated unless users want to grab the Sawzall and shred some steel. We will be looking to reduce this restriction as much as possible with our design. Here is a look at the factory setup.

  6. Mishimoto Ford 6.4L Powerstroke Aluminum Radiator: Version 2 Details

Mishimoto Ford 6.4L Powerstroke Aluminum Radiator: Version 2 Details

After jumping into the diesel truck market a few years ago, Mishimoto designed and released an aluminum radiator engineered specifically for the Ford 6.4L. We identified a serious concern with stock radiator failure. Numerous enthusiasts on a variety of online boards were experiencing extremely frequent failures, with some folks replacing as many as 3 radiators within the first 60,000 miles. In fact, this issue in combination with others that plague the 6.4L were enough to make a few truck owners revert to the previous 6.0L or upgrade to the newer 6.7L, swearing off the 6.4L after repeated issues with their trucks.

Being experts within the automotive & diesel cooling world, we immediately saw an opportunity to provide a solution for this problem. Our engineers designed an aluminum replacement radiator which provided a far more rigid construction, full aluminum, and still incorporated all of the stock quick-disconnect fittings. Our initial investigation regarding the stock radiator showed

Now that we had our initial shroud prototype prepared for testing, we installed it on the stock radiator and the Mishimoto aluminum radiator. We wanted to ensure that it fit perfectly and that it enclosed the full length and height of both radiator cores. Once complete, it was time to test the shroud within the engine bays of our test vehicles.

After being hounded by second-generation owners for months, our team decided it was time to fulfill their needs and develop an awesome intercooler upgrade for the 12V and 24V. We would be designing our cooler with a few key features that would set it apart from the factory unit.

    • Cast aluminum end tanks for smooth airflow and unmatched durability
    • Extremely efficient bar-and-plate core
    • Direct fit for the 12V and 24V second-generation trucks

    Project Intro

After a few successful electric fan conversion projects, we chose yet another vehicle that could benefit from the removal of the stock clutch fan. Our previous endeavors involved BMWs that experienced frequent failures of the plastic stock clutch fan. After checking through potential applications and scouring the forums, our team chose the Wrangler as a prime subject for a reliable and efficient electric fan conversion kit.

Along with providing greater reliability, replacing the mechanical fan with an electric fan would reduce rotating mass and possibly free up a bit of power. Extra power is always welcome!

We are nearing completion of this awesome project! With our bracket and housing finalized, it was time to fill in the gaps for the rest of the necessary components. First up, the filter selection. As mentioned earlier, we were looking for an efficient filter that could easily be purchased at any parts store. We went with the WIX 24070. Of course, any brand that will cross-reference with this filter will also function with our kit.
