    It Takes Two! - Secondary Radiator R&D, Part 1: Factory Review and 3D Models

    Whether we're talking about turbochargers on an F-150 EcoBoost, V8 engines in an offshore powerboat, drummers in the Allman Brothers Band, or pieces of Carvel™ Ice Cream Cake for dessert on my birthday, sometimes two is a better option than one. This was very much the school of thought that Ford's engineers adopted when designing the cooling system on the 2011+ F-Series Super Duty trucks, including the F-350, F-450, and F-550. These trucks feature two systems that work in parallel to handle all of the cooling needs in your truck, and both are equally important.

    Our engineers at Mishimoto also see the value in the "two can be better than one" mindset. When we bought our Mustang GT, we didn't stop there - we bought a turbo model, too. Many of you may know that we have already released a high-performance primary Ford 6.7 radiator, but I am excited to announce that we have been busy developing a Mishimoto Super Duty radiator for the secondary system as well.

    For as long as there have been stories, there have been heroes. Likewise, almost every hero has a sidekick (if he's lucky, at least). This concept spans a breadth of traditional mediums and relationships: George had Lenny, Aladdin had Abu, Jak had Daxter, and the Fresh Prince had Jazzy Jeff.     Cooling the Camaro - Radiator R&D, Part 2: 3D Models

    Greetings everyone! I hope you all enjoyed Cinco de Mayo last week. We celebrated here at the Mishimoto R&D Center with a salsa and dip competition - let me tell you, many of our team members have just as much talent in the kitchen as they do in the design center (and those of us who don't were grateful taste testers).

    Though our schedules have been VERY busy with projects, the beginning of show season, and maybe a few siestas here and there (definitely a necessity after all those corn chips!), our engineers have been able to squeeze in some time designing our improved aluminum 2016 Camaro SS radiator. I am here to show you the fruits of their labors! Let's take a peek at what they created.

    One Rad GT - Radiator R&D, Part 2: Final Prototype

    In our last post we took a look at our plans for the Mustang radiator and how we were designing it in Solidworks. Thanks to the speedy design, our first functional prototype is complete and ready for some test fitment!

    Straight out of the box, it is quite a hefty unit and should provide some much needed cooling for this GT. Check out some installed photos of our functional prototype.

    As you can see, the Mishimoto aluminum Mustang radiator is much larger than the stock unit. The end tanks on our Mishimoto unit are around the same width, but we have increased the size of our core to 52mm. This is a significant increase over the stock 25mm as well as the 36mm performance pack.

    There were no issues with clearance, even with our beefy core in place. All Mustang parts, both Mishimoto and stock, fit nicely with our radiator.

    As I'm sure many of you know, we strive for transparency here at Mishimoto, and we love sharing our development process with all of you. There are many benefits to this, and hearing your feedback ranks highly among them. That said, our search for inspiration is wide-reaching and multidisciplinary. Just recently, I happened upon an interview with Noam Chomsky, renowned thinker and MIT professor, who is quoted as saying: "I like the cold weather. It means you get more work done".

    I think Chomsky missed his calling in the automotive parts industry, because his sentiment is very much in line with how we feel about coolant temperatures in your 2016 Camaro SS. To that end, I'm sure he would be thrilled to learn that we have begun development on a brand new set of Camaro auxiliary radiators!

    One Rad GT - Radiator R&D, Part 1: Stock Evaluation

    As many of you are aware, we have explored nearly every inch of our GT in a quest to bring you some seriously awesome Mustang parts. While catch cans and oil coolers are exciting, we have a hunch that the most anticipated product is the Mustang radiator. Aluminum radiators are the staple component among our various product lines, so we were excited to show you our progress on this project.

    The stock radiator is your run-of-the-mill OEM unit equipped with plastic end tanks. While there is nothing wrong with this setup for the average GT, we still see some room for improvement. First, Ford was on the right track when it equipped it's performance-pack version of the GT with a larger radiator. The performance-pack boasts a 36mm core, compared to the standard GT radiator that comes in at 25mm. We plan to offer our own version, which will have more capacity than either the standard or performance-pack options.

  8. Mishimoto Waterjet Enhancements

    Mishimoto Waterjet Enhancements

    Our shop contains many unique tools and equipment to help aid our R&D team in the process of product development and testing. One of our more recent acquisitions is a very nice Waterjet machine. We've used this device to cut airbox pieces, catch can brackets, shop signage, fan shrouds, and many other components that can be constructed from flat sheet material. This tool been helpful in speeding up development projects, and we've really enjoyed learning about its many features.

    Waterjet Basics

    Despite being compact in physical size, this radiator is a dual-pass unit with a very dense fin composition. Cooling efficiency is quite impressive from such a small footprint. Although pressure won't be absurdly high, this radiator has strengthened tubes that can withstand around 100 psi. In addition to these benefits, the connection points on this radiator feature a threaded female port to accept different size and style connections. We intend to use -16AN fittings for the lines, which is an option

    Cooling The Camaro. 2016+ SS Primary Radiator R&D, Part 1: Stock Radiator Evaluation

    Mishimoto has been involved in the heat exchanger business for quite some time. Our team has produced many optimal aftermarket cooling solutions for vehicles new and old. We are finding now that OE heat exchangers have been improving substantially. This is occurring because vehicle curb weights have risen, and the horsepower war has continued to produce increasingly massive power output numbers.

    Now, this isn't to say there isn't room for improvement. Stock cooling systems are typically adequate for a stock vehicle in street-driving conditions and in some instances, light track driving. Once owners begin adding sticky tires for longer-duration lapping, stock heat exchangers have trouble keeping fluid temperatures properly regulated.

    Considering the weight and power output of the 2016 Camaro, we expect to see a need for improvement in both the primary and secondary radiator systems. This particular R&D project will cover the creation of our aluminum primary radiator for this vehicle.

    We last left you with some details of our initial design and a hint of an upcoming pre-sale for this overflow tank. Unfortunately, since that initial test fit we hit a few snags in the design process. Our goal with this product is to provide compatible fitment with all our other 2008+ WRX and STi components. This required numerous stages of test fitting, one of which revealed an issue. With our larger 3-row X-Line aluminum radiator installed, our sight tube on this expansion tank design ended up too close to the belt drive system on our Subaru.

    We decided a revision was necessary. Although the two components were not physically touching, the clearances were just too tight for our comfort. Luckily, our team had an alternate means of measuring fluid within the tank. This comes in the form of a dipstick!
