Coolant Maintenance

Regularly check your coolant level and condition. If the level is low, top it off with the appropriate coolant mixture. If the coolant looks dirty or discolored, it may be time to flush and replace it.

How to Use Mishimoto Coolant:

TOP OFF: Wait for the engine to cool down sufficiently before servicing the coolant system. Remove the radiator, reservoir, and/or overflow tank cap. Fill the radiator/reservoir/overflow to the appropriate full indicator line. Do not add water. Check the owner's manual for any other recommendations for appropriate filling/bleeding of the cooling system.

DRAIN/FLUSH/FILL: Do not remove the radiator cap if hot. Check your vehicle's service manual for flushing and filling directions. If you've lost your manual somewhere in your glove box, here are some general directions that apply to most vehicles.

  1. Check the cooling system for leaks, loose connections, or worn parts.
  2. Remove the radiator cap, open the radiator and engine block drains, and flush the system with clean water.
  3. Close radiator and engine block drains when all water has drained out of the system.
  4. Fill the system with Mishimoto Engine Coolant, and DO NOT ADD WATER. Make sure that the level is slightly lower than the filler neck.
  5. Set the heater on high and run the engine until it reaches normal temperature, then idle the engine for an additional 10–15 minutes. The thermostat will open to release trapped air. If necessary, top off the radiator with more Mishimoto Engine Coolant.
  6. Replace the radiator cap and check for leaks.

REMINDER:

Never drink antifreeze/coolant solution.

How Coolant Works

Engine coolant, also known as antifreeze, plays a crucial role in maintaining the proper temperature of your vehicle's engine. It works through a combination of physical and chemical processes. Here's how coolant works in a typical internal combustion engine:

  1. Absorbing Heat: The engine generates a significant amount of heat during combustion. Coolant circulates through the engine's cooling system, absorbing this heat from various components, including the engine block and cylinder head.
  2. Circulation: The hot coolant flows out of the engine and into the radiator, which is a heat exchanger located at the front of the vehicle. In the radiator, the hot coolant transfers heat into the tubes and fins of the radiator, which then transfers that heat to the surrounding air.
  3. Cooling: As the coolant releases heat in the radiator, it cools down and can absorb heat again. The coolant then circulates back to the engine to absorb more heat. This continuous cycle helps regulate the engine's temperature and prevents it from overheating.
  4. Antifreeze Properties: Engine coolant contains antifreeze additives, such as ethylene glycol or propylene glycol, which lower the freezing point of the liquid and raise its boiling point. This is crucial for preventing the coolant from freezing in cold temperatures and boiling over in hot conditions. It also protects the engine from potential damage due to extreme temperature fluctuations.
  5. Pressure: Because the cooling system is sealed, the coolant cannot expand as it absorbs heat. This creates pressure in the cooling system, further raising the coolant's boiling point and improving its ability to absorb heat. This is why it's important to ensure your radiator cap is functioning correctly and there are no leaks in the system to ensure proper cooling system pressure.
  6. Protection Against Corrosion: Coolant also contains corrosion inhibitors that protect the various metal components of the cooling system from rust and corrosion. This helps extend the life of the engine and cooling system.
