Skid Plates Redefined – The Mishimoto Advantage

The road is unpredictable, filled with hazards that can threaten the integrity of a vehicle’s undercarriage. From deep potholes to unexpected debris, even the most capable performance vehicles are vulnerable to damage where it matters most. Stock skid plates, if they exist at all, often fall short in providing the level of protection needed to safeguard critical components. That’s where our aftermarket skid plates come in, offering superior protection, durability, and functionality over their OEM counterparts.

Many manufacturers prioritize cost and ease of mass production when designing their vehicles, often leading to compromises in materials and design choices. A common example is the use of plastic splash shields instead of true skid plates. While these factory components may provide minimal protection against dirt and water, they are insufficient for guarding against more serious impacts. A direct hit from a rock, an unexpected speed bump, or a rough landing on a track day can crack a plastic undertray, leaving vital components exposed to further damage.

Our skid plates are engineered to solve these issues by replacing weak plastic with durable 5052 aluminum, which is composed of an alloy of both magnesium and aluminum. This material choice ensures the perfect balance between strength and weight savings, keeping vehicles protected without unnecessary bulk. For example, our skid plate for the 2023+ Nissan Z offers sturdy underbody protection while weighing in at only 10 pounds.

Not only is 5052 strong yet light, it offers excellent resistance against corrosion. While some aftermarket skid plates are made from 6062 aluminum, also know as the “aerospace alloy”, we’ve found 6062 tends to crack when bent into sheet metal form, which isn’t ideal for protective purposes. With that in mind, we’ve found 5052 aluminum to be the ideal choice for our skid plates.

Beyond durability and lightness, our engineers also focus on airflow. Factory undertrays often contribute to cooling system efficiency, directing air to key components such as oil coolers. Our team takes this into account and incorporates strategic vents and grates to maintain proper airflow while reinforcing vulnerable areas—meaning additional protecting doesn’t come at the cost of cooling performance. Additionally, our custom-designed air dams further improve the vehicle's cooling capabilities by creating a low pressure area underneath the vehicle and drawing high pressure air from the front, drawing a consistent flow of air through the vehicle's cooling stack.

We also recognize the importance of practicality. Take our skid plate for the 2015-2020 BMW F80 for example. When higher ground clearance is needed, the front diffuser is easily removable so you can get your BMW where it needs to go. Another example is the removable Oil Service Panel on the Nissan Z skidplate, making routine maintenance a breeze.

Installation is straightforward, with our skid plates engineered for a precise, direct fit. Mounting points align seamlessly with factory locations, ensuring a secure and stable installation without modifications. The final touch is a durable powder-coated finish, providing further corrosion resistance and a sleek, aggressive appearance that complements any performance build.

When it comes to protecting a vehicle’s undercarriage, OEM solutions often fall short, leaving critical components vulnerable to damage. Our aftermarket skid plates provide the strength, performance, and thoughtful design that drivers need to confidently push their vehicles to the limit. With superior materials, airflow-conscious engineering, and user-friendly features, our skid plates are the ultimate upgrade for those who refuse to compromise on protection.
