    Functional Form - Expansion Tank R&D, Part 2: Design & Pre-Sale

    The last time we saw our 2015+ F-150, it was still equipped with the plastic bag of dinner rolls that is the stock expansion tank. Since then, we've been busy designing, prototyping, and sampling a stronger and better-looking expansion tank for all 2015+ F-150s. Before we dive into our tank and the progress we've made, let's look back at the stock tank and some of its shortcomings.

    The expansion tank equipped to the 2015+ F-150 is fine enough for the average driver who spends most of their time looking at the outside of the truck or sitting in the cabin. For the enthusiast who spends hours under the hood, however, it presents a few problems.     What started in the late 1800s as a means of increasing the power and fuel efficiency of industrial engines, turbocharging has become abundant in every corner of automotive culture. Shortly after the first oil crisis in 1973, turbocharged vehicles grew in popularity as fuel-efficient alternatives to high-displacement engines. More than 40 years later, turbocharging has produced some of the most powerful and efficient vehicles the world has ever seen. Compared to those early vehicles, modern turbocharged systems are a complex network of piping, sensors, and heat exchangers that leverage every available ounce of technology.

    As our volunteer truck rolled into the shop, Dan began gathering his tools for a short, and ultimately rewarding, install. Removing the intercooler was second nature to him and before long, the stock transmission cooler was sitting next to its former home. Our much larger, much better-looking replacement took up residence in the truck with only two bolts. After months of work, the test fit was complete.

    Before we could begin testing, there were still a few final details to be worked out. You might notice that the lines fitted to our cooler are not the stock lines, and there's a good reason for that. The stock lines for the 2003-09 Ram utilize a quick-disconnect style fitting

    There are two things that are guaranteed to get just about everyone at Mishi HQ away from their desk for at least a few minutes. The first is as soon as something new or unique rolls into one of the bays. It doesn't matter if it's a massive diesel truck, C6 Corvette, or one of the 10th Gen Civic Hatchback Sports. Nearly everyone wants to get a close look at what we've brought in for R&D. The second thing that gets people shuffling through the shop is when that new car makes its way to our Dynapack system. Our conspicuously red FK7 was no exception. Everyone here was curious about how the scrappy L15B7 performs with a little help from Mishimoto, and I'm going to venture to guess that you are too.

    InterCOOLactic Planetary - 2017+ Honda Civic Type R Intercooler Kit R&D, Part 1 - Stock Review

    The weeks surrounding the new year are always a time for both reflection and a look ahead. If we look back on how Honda did in 2017, one could say that they made a splash. The previous year was the release of their spiced-up models, such as the Sport Hatch, aka the pseudo-Si, and the real Si as well. How could we forget the hatchback to rule them all, the Type R? Not only did Honda's ramped up hatchback rival the likes of the seasoned veterans of this field, specifically the AWD Focus RS, but it also took the crown for FWD cars at the revered Nürburgring. Even with these accolades, the CTR is still a mass-produced car. This means that it's inherently going to have some drawbacks due to budgets and production deadlines. We're spending 2018 to strengthen the chinks in the Type R's armor.

    The Civic has Boost! 2017+ Honda Civic 1.5T Intake R&D, Part 5 - Civic Si Development

    Ever since the mid-1980s, the Si has had a reputation for adding just the right amount of flavor to the standard Civic. With a tablespoon of suspension upgrades, an ounce of body kitting and interior trim, and just a dash of extra power, the Si follows the same recipe that Volkswagen set with the MK1 GTI. As the Civic has grown and evolved overtime, so has the spiced-up version, and while the Si hatchback might not be around anymore, the formula is still the same.

    The newest Si sets itself apart from the standard EX-T. The aggressive new styling, 18" alloys, and sporty interior let everyone know that you're not driving just a Civic. The improvements don't stop there. Along with the enhanced styling, the Si also gets a helical limited slip differential to evenly distribute the extra 25 horses and added torque to the front wheels.     At some point early on in our car obsessed years, we've all dropped in a cone filter, with a shiny tube, possibly with some flimsy heat shielding and called it an intake. We've also claimed we could feel the unharnessed power now bellowing out from under the hood. We've all been guilty of it. Really, it was just louder, and maybe with the right combination a few extra horses were added to the pack. Here at Mishimoto, we've moved way past that, as you can see from the amount of fabrication going into developing our initial intake prototype, not to mention the sheer amount of testing that has lead us to our first production sample.

    No matter how many trucks I write about, I'm always surprised how often a critical part of the drivetrain is underdeveloped. It's even more surprising when a truck built for towing and hauling has a major flaw in the transmission system. The transmission is the heart of towing, and when you're asking it to carry over five tons of truck and trailer up a grade, any weakness in the system is sure to show itself. However, the Allison transmission mated to 2001-2014 Duramax engines is not that weak point.

    Diff's Hot, Take it Easy - Rear Differential Cooler R&D, Part 5: A Tale of Two Track Days Part 2

    At first, admittedly, it didn't look like we were flexing as hard as we could with the Focus RS. With our full PTU/RDU cooling kit installed, we extended the time on the track with all four wheels producing power by about three minutes. However, after some reassessment, Dan transplanted the PTU temperature sensor from the gear oil into the coolant stream, producing great prospects for a fully functioning AWD Ford Focus. Since it would be a while until we could take our RS to the track, we decided to reach out to a third-party tester known for thrashing their cars in the name of motorsport.
