Ford's flagship off-roader design lives up to its "Built Wild" tagline. Function is prioritized over form. As rugged as these trucks look, those tough looks can only get you so far. Ford knew this and packed their Broncos full of tricks and traits that make them more at home on a desolate trail than crowded interstates. As wild as these Broncos are, some might find the 2.7L under the hood is still a bit domesticated. While not built to be a speed demon, some more attitude is always a welcome addition.

Intakes are always the best place to start when breaking any vehicle out of its shell, with the 2.7L Bronco being no exception. While bolting an intake kit on this 2.7L will provide immediate audible results, we expect most of the performance to come in tandem with performance mapping. We dive deeper

Compromise is a common thread through the Bronco fleet. These towering off-roaders are destined for the great outdoors but will likely spend most of their time cruising America's interstates. Compromises continue with the shared components between the different engine options found under the Bronco's hood, which means meeting in the middle in terms of performance. While these trucks aren't necessarily built for speed, that doesn't mean they can't be turned into speed demons.

Intakes are always the first step toward changing the demeanor of your vehicle, with the 2.3L Bronco being no exception. As we dig further into the development of our kit, the compromises continue, however. For starters, the Bronco essentially requires additional tuning to make full use of bolt-on upgrades due to MAP or speed-density-based

    High Road - 2021+ Ford Bronco 2.3L/2.7L Performance Intercooler R&D, Part 2 - Prototyping

Hitting the high road is not for the unprepared. This road less traveled is pocked with treacherous trenches and littered with rocky obstacles. While your Bronco is designed to glide over such tribulations, even the more hardened off-roader is still prepared for the eventuality that even Ford's mighty Bronco might get stuck. From training to shakedown trips, combined with the necessary recovery gear, man, gear, and machine make for the optimal off-roading team, and we want to make sure that your Bronco is ready for any excursion.

We take on the same concept here at Mishimoto as we make clearance for winches while improving your Bronco's performance. Relocating the intercooler, especially a vehicle with technology dripping from every corner, is complex, to say the least. Where our 3D scanning equipment and modeling software provide a scale virtual workspace for our engineers, nothing can top physically installing the design into the vehicle. So, to help streamline our process, we fired

Ford Family Fun - 2020+ Ford Explorer ST 3.0L Performance Intercooler R&D, Part 2 - Production Sample

Any road trip requires at least a small amount of planning. Sure, you could just jump into the car and drive, but it helps to know at least the direction you're headed in most cases. The planning requirements only increase as more passengers climb into your Explorer.

If the intercooler is the road map to the Explorer ST's expedition to more power, we here at Mishimoto prefer our trip to have a complete and detailed itinerary. Really, after a closer inspection of our production sample, our road trip looks more like the course details of a road rally.

When we last left off, our intercooler was just the framework of our design. This physical manifestation of the digital design was fabricated here at our R&D facility to triple-check our fitment before the real thing arrived. Well, the

Just like the wild horses these trucks take their name from, every Ford Bronco is equipped with a "go anywhere, do anything" attitude from the factory. No matter which engine is cradled under the hood, each Bronco is more than well equipped for a life of automotive freedom. However, for those serious overlanders lugging heavy recovery or camping equipment or those just looking for some extra shove back in their seat, some more power is needed. The intake system is the best place to start on your expedition for additional power.

Typically, when a manufacturer like Ford designs an intake system for their road-going vehicles, the engineering team performs a balancing act between a few factors to devise their final kit. These factors include meeting stringent efficiency and emissions standards,

Nothing brings the comfort of your typical daily driver to the wilderness, quite like the latest Ford Bronco. During its hiatus, Ford had plenty of time to research and implement the comprehensive range of improvements to their Jeep-fighter to dethrone the reigning off-road champ. Ford designed its sixth-generation Bronco to be the off-roader for everyone. Still, not everyone behind the wheel of the Bronco is seeking the dirt at the end of the pavement. Some would rather stuff more wild horses under the hood rather than load the truck down with the entire off-road accessory catalog. Maybe it's a combination of both, and you just need some more power to tote around that gear. In either case, Ford locked away plenty of power potential in all of their EcoBoost power plants,

Back From Pasture - 2021+ Ford Bronco 2.7 Baffled Oil Catch Can R&D, Part 3 - PCV-Side Production Sample and Test Results

Just like the wild stallion that the truck is named for, our donor Bronco stampeded back through our R&D facility after its preliminary 1000-mile test. While it was galavanting, though, our engineering team wrapped up the finishing touches on our kit to get it ready for the streets and trails.

The makeover started with our bracket. When we last left off, our prototype bracket was sporting a more universal design, with mounting holes encircling the top of the bracket. However, since this is a direct fit application, Ye made sure to utilize only the can mounting holes needed for the 2.7L so the ports will always face in the correct direction.

True Heart - 2021+ Ford Bronco 2.3L Baffled Oil Catch Can Kit R&D, Part 2 - Testing Results

The 2.3L EcoBoost is a mainstay in Ford's engine arsenal, which really shouldn't come as much of a surprise either. The heavy-hitting four-cylinder made a huge splash in the hottest of hatchbacks in 2016 that through every other segment of Ford's lineup. So it's no wonder that this powerplant found a new home under the hood of the resurrected off-roader, offering the best of both worlds in terms of performance and efficiency, but the Bronco only reaps these rewards as long as the intake tract stays clean. Luckily, we already have a solution for that.

When we last left off, our prototype catch can kit was installed on our Bronco as it headed out the door for our preliminary testing. It takes some time to accrue the proper mileage for our test, so, in the meantime, our engineer, Dave, put the finishing touches on our kit's design, starting with the bracket.

    Higher Plane - 2019+ Ford Ranger 2.3L EcoBoost Snorkel R&D, Part 4 - Testing

No matter the expedition, a shakedown trip is always in order. The worst time to find out that your pack is poorly constructed or your boots aren't as waterproof as advertised is halfway up the mountain. The same could be said for our snorkel for the 2019+ Ford Rangers. So, to make sure our kit was up to snuff, we made sure to shake it down through different forms of testing.

    Missing Link

Before we started testing, however, we still had a gap to fill, literally. The whole concept behind adding a snorkel to your off-roading rig is to entirely relocate your primary air inlet location out of harm's way, but a means of blocking off that inlet didn't appear in our last blog post. So we wanted to make sure that it got the spotlight it deserves.

Back From Pasture - 2021+ Ford Bronco 2.7L Baffled Oil Catch Can R&D, Part 2 - PCV-Side Concept and Design

The Bronco is back, which is basically old news at this point. However, as the hum of excitement subsides for this legend's return, the buzz is now shifting to the endless possibilities to customize and accessorize this off-roading machine. Naturally, Ford anticipated the owner's needs to personalize their Broncos, launching the line with a plethora of accessories to appear more adventurous and act the part. However, missing from the catalog was a means of adding a layer of protection against the onslaught of blow-by on the intake tract. Not to worry, though, since we here at Mishimoto wanted to ensure that you had options in that department.

Some of you might be asking what blow-by is and what it has to do with your intake system, while keen Bronco enthusiasts are also questioning the need for a catch can system on 2.7L EcoBoost's dual-injection system. Well, we're glad you asked! So, make sure you
