    Mishimoto Ford 6.4L Powerstroke Aluminum Radiator: Version 2 Details

    After jumping into the diesel truck market a few years ago, Mishimoto designed and released an aluminum radiator engineered specifically for the Ford 6.4L. We identified a serious concern with stock radiator failure. Numerous enthusiasts on a variety of online boards were experiencing extremely frequent failures, with some folks replacing as many as 3 radiators within the first 60,000 miles. In fact, this issue in combination with others that plague the 6.4L were enough to make a few truck owners revert to the previous 6.0L or upgrade to the newer 6.7L, swearing off the 6.4L after repeated issues with their trucks.

    Being experts within the automotive & diesel cooling world, we immediately saw an opportunity to provide a solution for this problem. Our engineers designed an aluminum replacement radiator which provided a far more rigid construction, full aluminum, and still incorporated all of the stock quick-disconnect fittings.     Welcome back! Our final bracket prototype is in and ready for installation. Check it out!

    This bracket is constructed from 1/8" steel and is powder coated for additional protection against damage from road debris. We overbuilt this unit to ensure longevity and optimal resistance against potential damage.

    Check out the hardware we will be using to attach our housing to the bracket. This hardware is also powder coated to prevent corrosion.

    Mishimoto Ford 6.4L Powerstroke Coolant Filter Kit

    We mentioned in our 6.0L coolant filtration thread that we would be tackling the 6.4L as well. Let's take a look at some of the components our team has been putting together for the 6.4L kit.

    Although the 6.4L does not seem to be as susceptible to buildups as is the 6.0L, a coolant filtration setup is certainly still a worthy investment in preventive maintenance.

    So let's get started!

    Filter Housing

    We'll start with the filter housing. As mentioned in our 6.0L thread, we developed a housing with a wide range of adjustability that could be utilized for a variety of kits. This housing is shown below.

    A few interesting things to note. First, we have replaced several of the bends that were previously plastic with our silicone hose. Instead of incorporating the bends into the quick disconnect fittings, we are using the hose to make all the bends.

    Also, the stock hose uses a double O-ring connection on the engine-side quick disconnects. On the radiator side, the stock still uses a single O-ring system. We use double O-ring connections on both ends of our hoses for better protection against leaks and to reduce the chance of air entering the cooling system of

    The Project Begins

    Looking to pair your 6.4L aluminum radiator with a nice set of silicone hoses? We thought so! After developing a variety of components for the 6.4L Powerstroke, we decided to take a closer look at the radiator hoses on this truck.

    After Ford released this truck in 2008, there were numerous complaints about leaking hoses. Ford issued a technical service bulletin (TSB) that offered a fix: a set of replacement hoses with an additional O-ring for better sealing power. This modification was made to the engine-side fitting of the hose, while the radiator-side still retained the single o-ring design. The replacement hoses seemed to solve the problem.

    We recently decided to take a look at the issues surrounding the frequent radiator failures for the 6.4L, check out our findings below!
    After identifying the radiator as a common failure point on the Ford 6.4L Powerstroke, Mishimoto was quick to develop a full aluminum cooling solution for the plastic end-tank factory radiator. We are well aware of the widespread issues with stock radiator leaking at the end tanks, core, and hoses. Ford has attempted to remedy this issue throughout several years, releasing numerous TSB's for a variety of cooling components.
