Heavy Breathing - 2017+ Honda Civic Type R Performance Intake R&D, Part 2 - Design and Prototype Fabrication

Intakes are typically the first modification that any automotive enthusiast would recommend in the name of quick power gains. It's really no surprise either. If you take a look at any modern vehicle on the road today, including the Civic Type R, stock intakes are full of silencers, restriction points, and accordion-style hoses. Those are three things that I know every gearhead doesn't want, and in fact it's quite the opposite when looking to add some power, so we've been researching solutions to get rid of them.

The top view of the airbox once it's removed from the car. The slim width of the box might lead to some creative solutions once we get into designing our box.

To start, let's briefly revisit our stock air intake. While the Type R is based on the return of the Civic hatchback to the US, it's no regular Civic hatchback. The beefed up aerodynamics on the exterior, and bright red racing seats, have the 305hp K20C1 to match, which includes a well-thought-out intake system. From the factory, Honda included a cast aluminum runner which not only accounts for 2/3 of the stock system, but also does most of our jobs for us. We only needed to focus

The Tale of the Ugly Hose - Silicone Hose Kit

Mishimoto 2016+ Camaro SS Coolant Hose Kit

Greetings, Camaro owners, and welcome to the first and only blog post about the new 2016+ Camaro SS silicone radiator hose kit. To get you all in the mood, let me grease you up with a little ditty about something to which we ALL can relate. (maybe).

    pablo-1

The above account, though fictional, is an example of something very real that could happen to anyone. This charming old tale does an excellent job at touching on two issues that stock coolant hoses bestow upon an otherwise wonderful vehicle.

Issue #1: The Ugly (but we can fix that)

When you open the hood of your SS, you want people to gasp with joy - not horror. The little boy in the story above fell in love with the Camaro's beauty, elegance, and emotion. We all can relate to that, but the stock hoses are just so"bland. We are offering the 2016+ Camaro SS coolant hose kit in multiple colors, so you can impress the next generation of car lovers in your choice of blue, black, or red. Check out some

Upgrading Induction - Induction Hose R&D, Part 2: From Concept to Reality

We are now one step closer to completing this induction project! The bulk of our testing is just about finished and we have gotten some awesome results. One of our biggest objectives was to increase the internal volume over the stock intake. With more air surging through the hose, the potential for improved power output is increased as well.

In our previous post, we said we would include all four ports and attachments. However, we decided on a complete omission of the sound imposer port. You will see what that looks like later on in this post. The 3D printed part you see above does have the port, but it is blocked off, simulating how the final design will perform on the dyno. Speaking of which, let's look at our dyno runs!

The stock intake tube begins at 95mm from the top of the airbox, which then leads into the accordion section that necks down to 87.5mm.

    Setting the Scene"

The early summer sun hangs low and cool against the rolling American meadows, lazily beginning to cast its gaze over another serene, newborn morning. Delicate but unwavering, it brings the landscape to life, painting the valley in amber shades so warm they can practically be felt. The depth and flowing continuity in these endless fields, draped in their clementine pallet, remains mostly unbroken but for a neat, dark ribbon of tarmac, slicing back and forth as if laid down by the hawk gliding soundlessly above.

Like an incoming storm, an imposing, thunderous tone bellows distantly above the hills, cutting through the picturesque still-life and growing louder as it echoes, following the zig-zagging vein of asphalt, ever-aggressively surging forward and inhaling the scene's serenity only to expel it rearward in an affront to all things understated. Contrasting though it may seem, the proprietor of this sound is just as quintessentially American as the gentle landscape through

When the designers at Chrysler were creating the Jeep Wrangler, they spent hours tweaking and finessing every line: the proportion of the headlights to the iconic seven-slot grill, the height of the bumper from the ground, and the curve of the fenders. Everything. The amount of passion that was poured into turning two rectangles and four circles into one of America's most coveted off-road vehicles cannot be measured - unless you ask an accountant. Passion built the Wrangler's body; pennies built its radiator hoses. But that's where Mishimoto steps in.

XD Induction Hose R&D, Part 2: The Working Prototype

Some exciting developments are brewing in the world of induction hoses! We recently received into our R&D facility our first shipment of samples for the 2016+ Nissan Titan XD, and they are all looking great.

Our tube's design is not overly complex, and it will be an awesome addition to the engine bay of this Cummins-powered Nissan. The design of the factory tube is interesting because of the type of bend it has. The orientation of the airbox opening does not have an even plane for a straight-through design that can just loop over to the throttle body. The opening angles out a bit, facing more in the direction of the truck's firewall. What results is an interesting loop that will force the hose to circle around the top of the oil filter. Check out an image of the factory system below.

XD Induction Hose R&D, Part 1: Design Plans

We're on a roll with new Titan XD project development! In addition to our plans for improving the factory intake, we have decided to implement an upgrade that is simple and awesome. What we'd like to do here is develop a silicone intake hose that will replace the factory intake tube.

The factory intake tube is a well-designed piece, but it has room for improvement. For instance, we can increase the volume of air that flows through the tube, which will only benefit this 5.0L Cummins turbo diesel. The factory piece will be comparatively restrictive in size when compared with our planned design.

This would be ideal for those who want to squeeze a bit more power out of their Titan XD, but would rather not replace the entire intake system. Along with the potential for more power output, it will also be a visual upgrade, improving the aesthetics of the engine bay.

Let's take a look at the factory tube.

The Civic Has Boost! - Intake R&D, Part 4: Prototype Kit Components

We finally have all our prototype 2016 Honda Civic parts together for this kit. Let's briefly examine everything we have so far, starting with the airbox.

As we discussed in the last post, we wanted to utilize the stock air inlet as much as possible, which is why we kept an opening at the top of the airbox. The remainder of the filter enclosure is protected within the physical box, to help keep out heat. The opening on the box where the mass airflow (MAF) sensor housing sits will be lined with weather stripping not only to prevent debris from getting inside, but also to secure the housing in place and absorb any flex resulting from engine torque.

The MAF housing looks really sharp! The cuts and edges on this piece are super clean, even though this is just a prototype unit. The MAF sensor will plug right into this unit. Check it out below!

Upgrading Induction - Induction Hose R&D, Part 1: Design Elements

Improving airflow is now a recurring theme for the stock 2015+ Mustang GT intake. In addition to finding air flow restrictions in our project to replace the entire stock intake system, we've also found several ways that a silicone induction hose for S550 drivers could improve airflow for drivers who would rather not replace their stock intakes. The stock piece is not only restrictive in size, but it also makes use of a resonator. We can make several improvements to take this induction hose design to the next level.

The hose itself is straightforward, except for the number of ports and attachments. We will be including those four ports in our design and will incorporate quick-disconnect fittings. Take a look at the image below.

To increase the amount of airflow that can travel from the airbox, we must enlarge the entire tube. This will produce give us an increase in volumetric area inside the tube. Although
