    Why a Catch Can?

Catch cans are used only for turbocharged vehicles, right? This is a question we hear all the time. Yes, a turbocharged vehicle is more likely to produce greater blow-by, resulting in a more prominent collection of debris in the intake manifold and tract. That being said, any engine is certainly susceptible to oil and fuel collection due to the use of PCV and CCV systems, which improve engine efficiency and provide cleaner emissions. Mishimoto has been working on developing several direct-fit oil catch-can systems for a variety of vehicles. So far we have completed kits for the Subaru WRX/STI for 2008-2015. We have also experimented with a kit for the BMW E90, a vehicle that suffers from intake valve buildups that require frequent servicing. With the arrival of our 2015 Ford Mustang EcoBoost test vehicle, we also began

  2. Road Test Results – Baffled Oil Catch Can for 2024+ Mustang V8

Road Test Results – Baffled Oil Catch Can for 2024+ Mustang V8

We’re entering the fourteenth year of production for Ford’s 5.0L Coyote V8 engine, and in that time the Coyote has made a name for itself. It’s a powerful, throaty engine that’s been in the Mustang GT since the 2011 model year. Since its inception, the folks at Ford have managed to squeeze an extra 68 horsepower out of the Coyote with the new 2024 Mustang GT boasting 480 horsepower. Despite these gains, one issue the Coyote has had for years still persistsβ€”excessive blow-by.

    What is Blow-by?

If you’re not familiar, blow-by is a result of high pressure on the top side of the piston pushing combustion gasses, as well as droplets of oil and fuel, past the piston rings and into the crankcase. To prevent excessive pressure in the crankcase, most modern vehicles extract blow-by via the PCV system and route it back into the intake. While most manufacturers add an air-oil separator to the PCV system, they often aren't as effective at removing oil as we might like. This leads to the problem of oil

Welcome back to the build of our BRZ/FR-S catch can system! After laying out the guidelines from the last post, we were ready to get some hands on the vehicle and start piecing together some can brackets. Before jumping into product design, we will quickly cover the unique injection system featured on the BRZ/FR-S FA20 engine.

    FA20 Fuel Injection

As many of you are aware, the FA20 is not what you could consider a traditional direct-injection engine. This specific system is identified as D-4S on the top of your intake manifold. The system utilizes four direct injectors and four port injectors for appropriate fueling. Yes, your 4-cylinder has eight injectors! The direct injection portion of the system is key for an efficient combustion process, and it allows for a high compression ratio without exaggerating the fear of detonation. Adding

Keep oil out of your intake - Oil Catch Can R&D, Part 1: Blow-By Introduction

The 2016 Mustang GT has arrived at Mishimoto, and we are wasting no time in developing products for Ford's newest version of the Pony car. We decided to begin with a version of our baffled oil catch can specifically designed to be direct-fit with the Mustang GT.

You would be doing your Coyote a favor by installing some type of catch can for preventative maintenance. Some feel that a catch can is not a necessity until you introduce forced induction, which may be the case. On the other hand every ounce of blow-by collected in a catch can is an ounce that is not heading back into your intake to kill fuel mileage, buildup on valves, and increase the risk of detonation. To read more about the benefits of a catch can in depth,Β check out our complete write up on Blow-By 101.

Mishimoto's Baffled Oil Catch Can was designed to trap virtually all blow-by from sneaking its way back into your intake. Our can is equipped with internal air diverters to direct airflow, a large baffle

Form and Function - Universal Carbon Fiber Catch Can R&D - Concept to Completion

Get your Mishimoto Carbon Fiber Baffled Oil Catch Can Today!

In the world of aftermarket modification, there are two directions to go in with any upgrade. Form or function. Some might not care if the part looks like a work of art just as long as it performs, and vice versa. That's an owner's prerogative, and maybe driving around a box that hits the 300 whp mark and sounds like a grizzly bear is all you need. Other enthusiasts prefer a flashy set of wheels and a few want the best of both worlds, style and efficiency, which isn't always available. It's not easy to get that perfect blend. That won't stop Mishimoto from trying, though. We're aiming to create a little gray from the black and white of performance against aesthetics all while protecting your engine from blow-by.

    Form to the Function

The business of defending the intake tract of any engine leans toward the side of function. Catch cans are installed to serve as a reservoir for that murky mix of fuel and oil aiming to infiltrate

Gotta Keep em' Separated - Catch Can R&D, Part 1: Stock Review

The Focus RS is a big hit at the Mishimoto headquarters, and we want to make sure to protect our newest addition. If you missed Kyle Mohan testing out the Focus RS drift mode, check out our Focus RS Drift Video. Luckily one of the first projects up to bat is our direct-fit baffled oil catch can. We know that the necessity of an oil catch can is a hotly debated topic among many car communities, and the Focus RS is no exception. From previous projects and research online, we've learned that blow-by is a real presence in these EcoBoost engines.

What is this notorious blow-by that I speak of? Blow-by is the unburnt oil and fuel mixture that blows past the piston and into the crankcase. Modern engines have a CCV (Crank Case Ventilation) system for emissions purposes. The CCV directs the blow-by back into the intake to be burned in the combustion chamber. Unfortunately, on its way back into the engine, blow-by leaves a nice oily

Now that we had a good idea of where to start with this project, our team began by selecting the appropriate catch can for the Mustang.

    Catch Can Selection

We have two options in catch cans. Our standard baffled oil catch can is shown below.

This innovative catch can features a slew of high-quality CNC-machined components. The unit utilizes thread-in fittings, an internal baffle, and a bronze 40-micron filter to separate the particles. We have had a ton of success offering this product as a universal catch can. One thing that may hold us back from using this component in the Mustang 2.3L is the general footprint. This is a large catch can and provides a massive volume for oil collection. Although the engine compartment of the 2.3L is rather spacious, we would need to fit two of these cans under the hood. This could affect the

Gotta Keep Em' Separated- Catch Can R&D, Part 2: Prototype Installation

It's the year of the horse"power, that is, wherein the land of the aftermarket, power modifications are king. They are the body builders of the modifications stomping around yelling about protein, bro. We all want to beef up our cars and hear them roar in the face of their stock counterparts. Understandably, it is easy to get caught up in the excitement of dyno charts and power numbers whileΒ overlooking the little guy in the background. This little guy, probably talking about something nerdy, is our good friendΒ the catch can. He doesn't scream horsepower, but instead whispers about carbon buildup on valves. And for this post at least, we are going to hear him out.

If you missed our last post, we discussed the importance of using a catch can on our brand-new Focus RS. If you want to read more about the horrors of blow-by check out Β our complete write up on Blow-By 101. In this post we are going to give the catch can a chance to put its money where its baffle is.

When we left you last time, we had equipped our Mustang up with our prototype dual-can setup, and we sent the vehicle out for some road use. Since we would be testing other components (intake and intercooler) at the same time, dyno pulls would also be conducted with this setup installed.

After just 300 miles of road use, this is what we found.

It's Interesting that our breather-side catch can looked fairly empty after our road testing.

The can above was bone dry. We continued to accumulate miles, and strangely enough, this can still did not collect any fluid. Although it had a scent of fuel and oil, accumulation was nonexistent.

With our results in, we came to the conclusion that our kit would include only the PCV-side catch can. We would never want to

Testing is complete! Although we would still like to be cruising through twisty back roads logging R&D miles, it is time to bring the Focus RS back to the stables to examine our catch can. When we test our catch cans, we try to put a wide variety of miles on the car to best replicate normal driving situations. We send one of our engineers out into the wild to put our development vehicle through its paces and ensure our products are functioning as designed.

    Blow-by Meets it's Match

Although our compact baffled oil catch can has been tried and tested numerous times, we still want to put it through the ringer to ensure that it functions just as nicely on every application. Just like our previous catch can kits, our compact baffled oil catch can has proven itself once again and our testing went off without a hitch. Upon initial investigation we noticedΒ oil buildup in the hose leading to theΒ catch can, on the internals of theΒ catch can, and pooled in the bottom
