Blow-By 101: What Is Blow-By and How To Keep It From Ruining Your Engine

Introducing Blow-by and the PCV System

Internal combustion engines are essentially controlled bombs; air and fuel combust to drive pistons and crankshafts. One byproduct of this violence is power, but there are darker horses to contend with. During combustion, high pressure on the top side of the piston pushes combustion gasses, as well as droplets of oil and fuel, past the piston rings and into the crankcase. This mixture is known as "blow-by."

    IMG_7482
Many modern vehicles use complex PCV systems to vent blow-by from the crankcase.

To keep the crankcase from becoming pressurized, causing issues with oil sealing and robbing the engine of power, blow-by is pulled from the crankcase via the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system and routed back into the intake. You may be seeing the problem already; oil and fuel are not what you want in your air intake system. Many modern cars employ some sort of air-oil separator system to minimize the amount of oil and fuel vapors that reach the intake. Due

So we asked ourselves, what makes a catch can appealing to the masses? In a market swamped with extremely low-priced options, a new product could easily get lost in the mix of products already available. Our team began sifting through forums and asking our contacts at local shops to see exactly what they wanted from a catch can. We also reviewed our current line of products, to see if we could develop a new design that would fit within our current offerings.

An efficient catch-can setup is not generally perceived as a product that will impact engine performance or power. This is not true at all! A catch can will make a significant impact on the cleanliness of the intake components, including the charge air cooler (CAC) system, as well as reduce detonation within the combustion chamber. Oil coating

Our Camaro catch can project continues! If you follow our development posts on the forums, please be sure to cast additional votes for our bracket design and silicone hose color. We are interested in obtaining as much feedback/opinion as possible so we can bring to market exactly the kit you want to see. So far, we've inspected the stock systems, selected a catch can location, and designed our initial bracket prototype. The final developmental phase includes constructing our direct-fit lines that will run from the PCV to the catch can, and from the catch can to the intake manifold.

Before showing our progress with that, I'd like to cover some of the neat aspects of our catch can.

We've hinted on the forums that the catch can we use is not your typical empty can stuffed with steel wool. Our baffled oil catch can is a highly engineered

    Catch can filter evaluation

Time to fabricate/prototype our awesome catch can design! We would be using our in-house fabrication equipment and our 3D printer to develop a plastic and metal prototype.

    Prototype Fabrication

We began by fabricating the base of the can from aluminum. Dan set to work cutting, welding, and polishing the base you see below.

Notice that the base of this can does not feature a drain. We did not incorporate one into our initial fabricated component, but we do plan to add a drain port on the base for those who wish to install a valve or drain line to the oil pan. No details were left untouched during development.

Next, we printed a unit and coated the inside for testing. The 3D printed material is somewhat porous. We use an internal coating that properly seals the components and provides a surface with properties similar to our

After selecting a catch can location and fabricating a mounting bracket, we needed to fully install the can/bracket combo and begin putting together a set of CCV lines to complete our kit.

    Catch Can Lid

Before doing so, the functional prototype of our catch can lid arrived for evaluation by our team. Check it out!

After evaluating the design of our first prototype and performing some additional research regarding customer needs, we were prepared to fabricate a second prototype. As noted toward the end of our last post, we would be relocating our catch can for easier servicing, and we would also be designing a new catch can lid to accommodate the larger ports for the N54 CCV system.

    Catch Can Lid Prototyping

A teaser in our last post revealed the plans we had for our large-port catch can lid. Check out a few more shots of this 3D-printed unit below.

Mishimoto Mazda Miata Baffled Oil Catch Can Kit!

If you've been keeping an eye on our blog or posts on the forums, you would notice some recent attention on ND Miata R&D. We have big goals to improve air inhalation for the 2.0L by way of a high-flow intake system, and we are knee deep in an awesome oil cooler setup, which will keep fluid temperatures in-check during track driving. Although this project might not be as neat in terms of testing data and added performance, it is equally important.

    Why a Catch Can?

Catch cans and direct injection go together like Miatas and R-comps. You might not think you need it, but once installed, you won't want it removed. We've been designing direct-fit catch can systems for quite some time, for a variety of applications that greatly benefit from the addition. If you follow the progress of direct injection, you will see a variety of issues regarding valve

As you may be aware, our engineering team has been wrenching away on this Focus ST to develop a slew of awesome products for the community. Our oil cooler development is underway, and alongside this project we began to experiment with a direct-fit oil catch can system. Now, you may be wondering exactly how necessary such a product is.

Discussions around the community have covered the impact of oil within the intake system and its effect on valve buildup. In short, the lack of port injection (the EcoBoost uses direct injection) results in much of the oil within the intake system coating your valves. In a port-injection engine, the fuel passing over the valves works as a cleaning agent to prevent buildup. Without this happening, these buildups can restrict airflow and cause turbulence to airflow prior to entry into
