You spend hours washing, waxing, and polishing. Not a single drop of water or speck of dirt is left on the paint's surface when you're done. The interior is the same story; the carpet, seats, and dash look better than on the day you picked up your new BMW from the dealer. You spend precious time and effort protecting your investment from the outside, but what about the places you can't see? I don't mean that spot under the seat where you have to break every bone in your hand to retrieve your phone. I mean the heart of the car: the engine. Using high-quality fuel is a start to keeping your engine healthy, but there are more threats that you may never see coming until they've already gotten the best of your engine.

Looking Back

In the last post, we looked at the N55's stock PCV system; we examined its advantages and disadvantages, and how blow-by can harm your engine. We also took a quick look at how we started developing our catch can. This time, we'll be taking a look at the prototype

It's the year of the horse"power, that is, wherein the land of the aftermarket, power modifications are king. They are the body builders of the modifications stomping around yelling about protein, bro. We all want to beef up our cars and hear them roar in the face of their stock counterparts. Understandably, it is easy to get caught up in the excitement of dyno charts and power numbers while overlooking the little guy in the background. This little guy, probably talking about something nerdy, is our good friend the catch can. He doesn't scream horsepower, but instead whispers about carbon buildup on valves. And for this post at least, we are going to hear him out.

Subaru WRX Baffled Oil Catch Can System

If you follow our engineering blog or are involved with any of our social media outlets, you should be well aware of the new baffled oil catch can we recently released. This new product features a much smaller footprint compared to our existing catch can, allowing for fitment in tighter engine bays.

While developing this catch can, we wondered about using it in direct-fit kits for popular vehicles. For most drivers, a catch can is a DIY project requiring only the routing of hoses and fabrication of brackets for mounting the can. Installing a DIY setup that appears like it was made for the vehicle can be quite a challenge. This is where we come in, to take the guesswork out of a catch can installation. We are planning to provide mounting brackets, hardware, silicone lines, and a detailed installation guide for these kits.

Second Prototype Bracket Fabrication

Now that we had our catch can ready to go, it was time to select mounting locations, and fabricate the mounting brackets. First, we will start with the PCV line we initially targeted with the large catch can we had. Check out some initial mock-up shots!

Compared to the previous mounting point, we have moved this catch can to a more centralized position. We are no longer using the battery tie-down as a mounting point. This provides a cleaner install, and it also provides space for the brake booster/master on RHD vehicles. The lines shown in the image are purely for mockup and routing purposes.

We will likely offer these lines in our standard three colors; black, blue and red. We also use silicone lines for all of our direct fit kits. Silicone

The 2016 Mustang GT has arrived at Mishimoto, and we are wasting no time in developing products for Ford's newest version of the Pony car. We decided to begin with a version of our baffled oil catch can specifically designed to be direct-fit with the Mustang GT.

You would be doing your Coyote a favor by installing some type of catch can for preventative maintenance. Some feel that a catch can is not a necessity until you introduce forced induction, which may be the case. On the other hand every ounce of blow-by collected in a catch can is an ounce that is not heading back into your intake to kill fuel mileage, buildup on valves, and increase the risk of detonation. Mishimoto Ford Mustang EcoBoost Baffled Oil Catch Can

Now that we had a good idea of where to start with this project, our team began by selecting the appropriate catch can for the Mustang.

We have two options in catch cans. Our standard baffled oil catch can is shown below.

This innovative catch can features a slew of high-quality CNC-machined components. The unit utilizes thread-in fittings, an internal baffle, and a bronze 40-micron filter to separate the particles. We have had a ton of success offering this product as a universal catch can. One thing that may hold us back from using this component in the Mustang 2.3L is the general footprint. This is a large catch can and provides a massive volume for oil collection. Although the engine compartment of the 2.3L is rather spacious, we would need to fit two of these cans under the hood. Subaru STi Baffled Oil Catch Can System

After completing the fabrication of our brackets for this kit and assembling the STI-specific lines, it was time to tackle the WRX. As you may be aware, the stock CCV lines are slightly different on the WRX, which necessitates a separate set of WRX-specific catch can lines.

The Test Subject

After reaching out to local contacts, we found a willing vehicle donor just one state away. We have borrowed this particular vehicle on several occasions for a variety of test fittings. A big "thank you" to the owner for lending his vehicle and his time for the sake of awesome new product development!

Last time we took a look at the passenger-side catch can setup for our brand-new Mustang GT. We will still be making more improvements to our original design going forward, but the main location will stay the same. Now onto our driver-side catch can development!

The driver-side catch can was a bit more difficult to place than the passenger-side catch can. We wanted to position the catch can such that it would fit with the rather intricate stock intake, while still leaving room for aftermarket intakes. Our engineers utilized the radiator stay, similar to the passenger-side, to tuck the catch can off to the side and out of the way, thus saving room for some additional Mustang parts.

Although we do not expect to see much accumulation in the driver-side catch can, we will still test it for comparison purposes.
