    As you may be aware, our engineering team has been wrenching away on this Focus ST to develop a slew of awesome products for the community. Our oil cooler development is underway, and alongside this project we began to experiment with a direct-fit oil catch can system. Now, you may be wondering exactly how necessary such a product is.

    Discussions around the community have covered the impact of oil within the intake system and its effect on valve buildup. In short, the lack of port injection (the EcoBoost uses direct injection) results in much of the oil within the intake system coating your valves. In a port-injection engine, the fuel passing over the valves works as a cleaning agent to prevent buildup. Without this happening, these buildups can restrict airflow and cause turbulence to airflow prior to entry into

    Mishimoto Mazda Miata Baffled Oil Catch Can Kit!

    If you've been keeping an eye on our blog or posts on the forums, you would notice some recent attention on ND Miata R&D. We have big goals to improve air inhalation for the 2.0L by way of a high-flow intake system, and we are knee deep in an awesome oil cooler setup, which will keep fluid temperatures in-check during track driving. Although this project might not be as neat in terms of testing data and added performance, it is equally important.

    Catch cans and direct injection go together like Miatas and R-comps. You might not think you need it, but once installed, you won't want it removed.     After developing a highly successful, direct-fit catch can setup for the 2015 WRX we turned our attention to the previous generation. Our next target would be the 2008-2014 WRX and STI. At this point, Mishimoto still owned a 2010 STI, and this project would be our last for our shop vehicle.

    Catch Can Selection

    As with our 2015 WRX project, we would be using a dual catch can system to address both the PCV line and the crankcase breather line. One of the main differences would be the inclusion of a three-port breather catch can to replace the two-port unit used on the FA20 engine. The EJ engine features a breather line for each valve cover, which necessitates a dual-in, single-out catch can for that system. The PCV line would still use a standard dual-port catch can for the EJ.

    Keep Your Intake Clean - Oil Catch Can R&D, Part 2: Bracket Fabrication

    After removing both catch cans for data collection in our previous post, we discussed the idea of relocating the bracket that holds the PCV catch can to a different area in the engine bay. We mentioned earlier that we were toying with the idea because the current location of the Fiesta ST catch can raised some concerns. One of them being that the current location for the catch can would interfere with right-hand drive (RHD) applications of the Fiesta ST, and we want this catch can to be all inclusive. In addition, it came to our attention later on that it would also interfere with some aftermarket intakes.Β  We try to take common Fiesta ST parts upgrades into consideration so that the products we make will fit all Fiesta STs. The consensus was that because there was a bit more room further forward in the engine bay to relocate the catch can, that would be the way to go.

    Mishimoto Ford Focus ST Baffled Oil Catch Can Kit

    After making mockups for our initial setup and evaluating short-term testing data, our team came to a few conclusions. First, we would be incorporating our catch can into the PCV line only. Our brief accumulation test showed that we had substantial fluid accumulation with the PCV line, while the CCV can ended up dry. Second, our mounting location was really subtle and created a factory-like fitment with no visible lines. Last, the ST produces quite a lot of contaminants even in a short period of time, so a catch can is going to be a great upgrade in terms of preventive maintenance.

    Bracket Fabrication

    Next on our to-do list was final bracket fabrication. Something more stout and aesthetically pleasing were our targets. We would also only need to accommodate one catch can as opposed to our original mockup bracket.

    Bracket Location and Fabrication

    The starting point for this Camaro oil catch can project is to determine the location of the catch can. Our can will be mounted by a direct-fit bracket specifically designed for the Camaro.

    Our goal is to create a kit that is stock-like in appearance and allows for easy draining and servicing.

    After considering a variety of locations for the can, we decided that the driver-side strut tower would be ideal.

    In the image above you can see the stock bracing on our SS. This brace ties the cowl into the strut towers. Our plan is to utilize the two mounting bolts on the tower for our catch can bracket. Below, the bolts are removed for collection of measurements.

    Mishimoto Subaru BRZ / Scion FR-S Baffled Oil Catch Can

    Ready for some interesting test results? After around 2,000 miles on a BRZ, this kit was ready to be inspected to see what kind of byproduct had accumulated in each can. The plan was to evaluate both systems to determine whether a single- or dual-can setup was necessary. If one of the lines did not collect any fluid, the need for a catch can would not be justified. So, we popped the hood and inspected the system to see if road abuse had a negative impact on the mounting brackets or lines.

    All our components held up just fine, as expected. All mounting brackets were still securely positioned, and the lines appeared to be in great shape (no rubbing). First, we popped off the can spliced into the PCV line of the BRZ. These images also show that we have provided plenty of room below the can

    Mishimoto Mazda Miata Baffled Oil Catch Can Kit!

    In our first segment, we removed all components within the 2.0L intake system to evaluate oil contamination. Our findings indicated that a reasonable amount of oil was making its way into the intake manifold through the PCV system. Not only was this coating the manifold, it was producing buildup on the valves themselves. A catch can install is an easy way to slow this progress, which is exactly what we will be working on for the ND.

    For the ND, and all our existing direct-fit kits, we will be utilizing our compact baffled oil catch can. This component has proven to be extremely effective at separating oil/fuel byproduct in numerous applications.

    This catch can has numerous features that enhance functionality. We've incorporated an air diverter on the inlet, which will allow the fluid/air mixture to turbulate within the can and help

    Welcome back to the build of our BRZ/FR-S catch can system! After laying out the guidelines from the last post, we were ready to get some hands on the vehicle and start piecing together some can brackets.     As many of you are aware, the FA20 is not what you could consider a traditional direct-injection engine. This specific system is identified as D-4S on the top of your intake manifold. The system utilizes four direct injectors and four port injectors for appropriate fueling. Yes, your 4-cylinder has eight injectors!     Why a Catch Can?

    Catch cans are used only for turbocharged vehicles, right? This is a question we hear all the time. Yes, a turbocharged vehicle is more likely to produce greater blow-by, resulting in a more prominent collection of debris in the intake manifold and tract. That being said, any engine is certainly susceptible to oil and fuel collection due to the use of PCV and CCV systems, which improve engine efficiency and provide cleaner emissions. Mishimoto has been working on developing several direct-fit oil catch-can systems for a variety of vehicles. So far we have completed kits for the Subaru WRX/STI for 2008-2015. We have also experimented with a kit for the BMW E90, a vehicle that suffers from intake valve buildups that require frequent servicing.
